    I suspect that the answer is that the password is held in an encrypted format withing the file and nowhere else, in which case the answer is ‘yes’!  — yes Correct, AxCrypt is a file encryption software with no backdoor. AxCrypt do not store users’ information or password in our server, instead it will keep the users’ basic information like Email address, IP Address and more.

    Is that the AxCrypt app in local mode ? – No, If users used an old AxCrypt account password to sign in with the AxCrypt app, then the AxCrypt app will warn the user with local mode.

    we have already explained in local mode.

    I’ve started to use the same password on both AxCrypt app and my Online account (your server). I then changed password for my Online account—Do you log in to the AxCrypt app in the previous password? if yes, the AxCrypt app is changed to local mode.

    In your system “Recent file” view is tracking for windows not for AxCrypting.

    and the older file will also not decrypt with the correct password. — No, AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

    Could the AXcrypt progrma on the machine have developed an infelicity?  — if file is corrupted/demaged cannot decrypt that file. If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.

    I still have the install module for that AXcrypt — if I reinstall it will it work with the existing encryped filed or does it set up new passcodes? Equally, if I install a later version of AXcrypyt should it work with existing encrypted files? — AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. In addition to that, 2.x implements of lot of new rich features, while some functions of 1.x are deprecated. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x. You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same time.

    You can open/decrypt the previously encrypted document with the latest version(2.x). Still, you can open/decrypt the old encrypted files with the original file password(which was used in the file encryption process).

    Do you have login with the AxCrypt app in local mode? -if yes  We will explain more about, what is the local mode?

    You might be used your old AxCrypt password(which is different from the one that is exists in our account server) to sign in to the AxCrypt app.

    If users used an old AxCrypt account password to sign in with the AxCrypt app, then the AxCrypt app will warn the user with local mode warning text(like you are getting).

    You can also use the AxCrypt app in local mode. But the currently used sign in password will be used to encrypt the files. We do not suggest the users to use it in local mode, unless any special cases.

    So, Please use your latest password to sign in with the AxCrypt app(internet enabled) without any issues.

    Or

    Please try to clear the AxCrypt local contents via the AxCrypt file menu File | Options | Clear All Settings & Restart.

    Please check the file size, AxCrypt file format and also check the file is Corrupted or not?if file is corrupted/demaged cannot decrypt that file.

    Most often, this error occurs because the file is not produced by AxCrypt, but rather a different kind of file accidentally renamed to end with .axx. Another scenario is that it is a left-over after a previous decryption was interrupted at the stage where the original is overwritten.

    If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.

    But we have a feature called Try Broken File. You can able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.

    Now you can able to see the Debug the menu in the AxCrypt app. From the debug menu you have to select Try Broken File.

    Now you will be prompted for file selection. Select the corrupted encrypted file and then AxCrypt will try to decrypt the file. If successfully decrypted, then you are able to see the decrypted file in the location. Otherwise sorry to say, AxCrypt can’t decrypt that file.

    please check the file structure to make sure that the file was not corrupted by using the AxCrypt menu option(Debug |Check file). You can see all OK in the check file summary, if the file is valid.

    AxCrypt 2 now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.

    Do you ask for different password for different files? If yes, Sorry to say, AxCrypt 2.x does not support different password for different files feature due to some security reasons. Please refer our blog for more info: https://www.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/. .

    AxCrypt will use the AxCrypt account password to encrypt/decrypt the files. The account password is used/involved to encrypt the files with the AxCrypt app.

    The Mac operating system Catalina or above latest version, includes some security features. Still, we can install the AxCrypt app in the mac OS Catalina and above. We are planned to fix the popup issue in the near future version. Here is the workaround,

    First download the AxCrypt app in your Mac system. After download the AxCrypt app,

    Please follow the instructions to install the AxCrypt app without any issue.

    • Go to downloads or other folder(where the AxCrypt app was downloaded) in the finder app.
      Click with two fingers or Control click on the selected setup file.
      Choose Open in the right-click context menu.
      Now, AxCrypt installation process will get started.
      Then click the open button in the alert dialog.
      Now, AxCrypt installation process will get started.

    After installing, Start securing or decrypting/open your files with the AxCrypt app.

    Hello Steve Schwab,

    AxCrypt will keep track on the opened encrypted files, to update and re-encrypt the same. If we opened the file and updated the contents, then AxCrypt will re-encrypt the updated file.

    So after editing the encrypted files, we have to click the broom icon or sign out from the AxCrypt app to re-encrypt the updated files. We have to close all the instance of the encrypted file(s) opened application.

    And the AxCrypt app will be checking whether the opened file and the corresponding application are closed or not? If closed, then the AxCrypt app will automatically update the contents of the file and re-encrypt the same.

    Actually, we have to close the file opened application completely, to update and re-encrypt the file. Sometimes, we have to manually click the red Broom icon, to clean and update the pending files.

    For example: You opened an encrypted document and updating the document. At the same time, If you have opened another document in the same application, or even if just the application is running without an opened document, AxCrypt can’t be sure enough to actually do the re-encryption.
