Hello kapodust,
You can open/decrypt the previously encrypted document(1.x) with the latest version(2.x). Still, you can open/decrypt the old encrypted files with the original file password(which was used in the file encryption process).
Please do not forgot the password which was used in the file encryption with the AxCrypt 1.x. Because you need the same password to decrypt the AxCrypt 1.x encrypted files in AxCrypt 2.x.
AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. In addition to that, 2.x implements of lot of new rich features, while some functions of 1.x are deprecated. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x.
If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, which often is the case directly after upgrading to version 2, you will be prompted for that original password. If the file was encrypted with version 1, it will then be automatically upgraded to version 2 and to use the new sign in password which means you won’t be prompted again for the old password.
If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://forum.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/ . Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this.
AxCrypt 2 now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
AxCrypt will use the AxCrypt account password to encrypt/decrypt the files. The account password is used/involved to encrypt the files with the AxCrypt app.
AxCrypt 2.x does not support different password for different files feature due to some security reasons. Please refer our blog for more info: https://www.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/ .
If you have any queries, please feel free to contact our support via support@axcrypt.net.
Hello Vedhas,
AxCrypt will not send the physical file. You can send the encrypted file via email(Gmail, yahoo, etc..) to other users
Key sharing embeds the shared key into the file. The file must thus first be key shared with the recipient, then sent or file shared. Please note that AxCrypt does not share or send the actual file.
Here is the tutorial how to do it AxCrypt – Key Sharing – YouTube
If the above doesn’t help, please provide detailed information about the issue and screenshot.also write a email to support@axcrypt.net.
Hello Joel,
AxCrypt 2 works just like your email software or most other password-protected systems. You sign in once and remain signed in until signed out. Just like you can read many emails without entering the password every time, AxCrypt will do the same. The files are still encrypted, but your password is remembered until you sign out of AxCrypt.
AxCrypt stays signed in until signed out, just like most similar applications such as your email. Once signed in, you can read, write and update information without having to re-enter the password, until signed out. AxCrypt will automatically sign out when the screen saver goes active(based on the Inactivity Sign Out configuration), or you can sign out manually.
You can use our Inactivity Sign Out feature, to sign out the AxCrypt app on certain time interval of inactivity. Also you can sign out the AxCrypt app, when opened the encrypted file(s). Now AxCrypt will ask the user to enter the sign in password to sign in to the AxCrypt app.
For Inactivity Sign Out, File | Options | Inactivity Sign Out | Choose duration in minutes.
Please note: Inactivity Sign Out is s premium feature.
If somebody know your system password, so you can sign-out the AxCrypt app manually
If the above doesn’t help, please provide detailed information about the issue and screenshot.also write a email to support@axcrypt.net.
Hello CHAZOTTES,
I conclude that AxCrypt does not work with my Excel 2019 application under Win 10. — AxCrypt decrypts the encrypted file and helps to open the same with the corresponding application(s).
When we open the encrypted (.Microsoft office excel) files, AxCrypt just decrypts the files only. After that Microsoft office excel for are opening in the Corresponding Application which was mapped in the system. So please check the corresponding application are install in your system or not. If not, AxCrypt will not open the file.
If the above doesn’t help, please provide detailed information about the issue and screenshot.also write a email to support@axcrypt.net.
Hello Anonymous,

Hello Baz,
We discuss with our team.
Hello Federico Fuentes,
I am sorry to say, If the encrypted file is corrupted/Demaged then AxCrypt will not able to decrypt the same.
But we have a feature called Check File. You can able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.
Also we can generate a summary of file structure, to see whether the file was encrypted with AxCrypt or not.
For the summary, you have to use the debug menu and then select the Check File menu option(Debug | Check File). Now you will be prompted to choose the files. Choose the AxCrypt encrypted file. Then AxCrypt will generate a summary of file structure.
If you have any queries, please feel free to contact our support via support@axcrypt.net.

Hello Nigel Barrett,
error warning “……..is not an AxCrypt file” — The error message indicates that the file simply is not an AxCrypt file – it checks the first 16 bytes for a unique value.
Most often, this error occurs because the file is not produced by AxCrypt, but rather a different kind of file accidentally renamed to end with .axx. Another scenario is that it is a left-over after a previous decryption was interrupted at the stage where the original is overwritten.
If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.
If the file was damaged, then try to use the Try Broken File feature. Yes, We have a feature called Try Broken File. With that, we are able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.
Now you are able to see the Debug the menu in the AxCrypt app. From the debug menu you have to click Try Broken File.
Now you will be prompted for file selection. Select the corrupted encrypted file and then AxCrypt will try to decrypt the file. If successfully decrypted, then you are able to see the decrypted file in the location. Otherwise sorry to say, AxCrypt can’t decrypt that file.

Hello Jibse,
AxCrypt 2 asks you to sign in to your account, which AxCrypt 1 did not. We now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files. The password that you’re being asked for is the password to your account, which you probably created when you first installed AxCrypt 1.
You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same time.
AxCrypt 2.x will be available on many platforms and devices, while AxCrypt 1.x will always be limited to the Windows desktop. The new version is rewritten from the ground up on a new technological platform, and there are many differences.
AxCrypt 2 comes with newly improved and user-friendly user interface, account management(subscription information, password change and etc.) and more additional features.
You can download the Latest AxCrypt(2.x) from our official website: https://www.axcrypt.net/download/.
Please refer the link to know the difference between Free and Premium subscription features, https://www.axcrypt.net/pricing/ .

Hello Nigel Barrett,
You have wrongly mapped the default connection. Please change the default extension .axx file, please follow the below steps to change the default extension(mapped). After changing the default extension AxCrypt working without any issue.
AxCrypt encrypted files should have a file extension “.axx”. Also, default application for the file type “.axx” should be AxCrypt app only.
If the AxCrypt app is not configured as a default app for the file extension or no other apps are mapped to the file extension.
Might be, the default application is not mapped for the file extension “.axx” in your system. So please change the default application to AxCrypt for the file extension for “.axx” with the help of following links,
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028161/windows-10-change-default-programs or https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/18539/windows-7-change-default-programs.
Still, if you are facing any issues, please write to Support@axcrypt.net. we are happy to help you.
July 8, 2021 at 12:46 in reply to: Why many installfiles of the same setup name but with different sizes?? #21789Hello Daniel,
Yes, correct. We are stopped developing new features and fixing issues for the legacy version(AxCrypt 1.x). we will not be actively developing 1.x, nor will support be a priority. We are advising users to use AxCrypt 2.x latest.
Hello Melvin,
Apologies for the delayed response.
It is presented as a way to secure files in Google Drive, but if i understand it correctly it only works this way if you sync your google drive with your local? –Yes.You can use AxCrypt to secure your files which are all stored in your cloud service like google Drive, Dropbox, one drive, etc..
AxCrypt Cloud Storage Awareness is really just about detecting installed cloud services, creating a “My AxCrypt” folder and then designating the created folder as ‘Secured’. However, the feature is really useful only when the folder is Secured, i.e. monitored for new files to encrypt.
After synchronizing your GoogleDrive files to your local, just encrypt those with the AxCrypt app. Once again sync your local with GoogleDrive.
Note : If we tried to decrypt/encrypt the files which are synched with the cloud storage services(like googledrive and etc), then the cloud service provider/application will need internet to sync the file(s) between your system and the cloud service. So that time we need internet to synch the files.
So you can not use actually use Axcrypt to secure Files in google drive? or Google Domain? — No.
If you have any queries, please feel free to contact our support via support@axcrypt.net.
