Hello bernardpalissy and Biu55,
If the blog post https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/ gave the impression that the argument is “having several passwords is bad, because it’s bad.” I’ll have to rework it a bit ;-)
What I was trying to say is that having several passwords is:
– At best, unnecessary and does not contribute or add any security.
– At worst, reducing security, because it’s harder to keep track of and use several equally strong passwords.
– If sharing with others is the goal, the AxCrypt 2 key sharing feature is a much better and easier-to-use way to do it.
The holy grail of security and authentication for over 20 years have been “single sign on” – one password to rule them all. Most security experts agree that fewer and stronger passwords is better. AxCrypt 2 is trying to at least not increase the problem with multiple passwords, by providing a good mechanism to reduce the need to a single password for AxCrypt at least.
Having several passwords is bad, because it increases the problem of having strong passwords without adding any real security benefits.
Hello Juliana,
It’s not entirely easy to know what has happened, but the error message is not from AxCrypt, it’s from Microsoft Word I believe.
Can you perhaps try to just decrypt the file, and see if that works?
If it was an existing file, and you have a backup via Time Machine, you can always restore it from there.å
We’ve had no previous reports of file corruption in the Mac like this, so something else has happened.
Please remember – you cannot open an encrypted file from *within* Word! You have to open it via AxCrypt (or from Finder, which will invoke AxCrypt), or decrypt it first using AxCrypt.
Hello Eduardo,
Have you tried right-clicking the file and selecting AxCrypt | Decrypt instead of double-clicking?
Also, when you say nothing – do you mean that you do not get a password prompt, or is it after entering your password that “nothing” happens?
Hello Reza.vj,
I’m not sure what you’re saying. It sounds like you’re saying that you renamed ‘reza1-mp4.axx’ to ‘reza1.mp4’.
What did you expect would happen if that is what you did?
What will happen is that if you try to open it, it’ll try to do so using the video player registered for .mp4-files. That will fail badly, because it’s not an mp4 file. It’s an encrypted AxCrypt file, and the player will probably give you an error message saying it can’t play the video.
Hello Eduardo,
AxCrypt version 1 is obsolete and unsupported. It’s hard to help you out also when you just say “nothing happens”. I’m sure something happens – also, just exactly what are you doing? A screen shot may help a lot.

AxCrypt version 1 is obsolete and unsupported.
I’ll try anyway. If the file is larger than 2GB it can’t be decrypted by the self-decrypting software. This is a limitation of Windows.
January 30, 2018 at 13:27 in reply to: Account Encryption Password versus File Encryption Password #9305Hello bernardpalissy,
You can always uninstall AxCrypt 2, and use the unsupported AxCrypt 1. But before you do, please read https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/ which tries to explain why different passwords for different files is at best unnecessary, at worst harmful for security.
Sorry, no! It’s complicated to write very general pattern generation. There is the word order mode, but right now we don’t support a mix of both the limited regular expression syntax and the word order. We might be able to do this in the future, and we’ll also publish the software as open source so it can be developed by the community – but it may take a while I’m afraid.
Hello Neil,
No worries. We’ll never lock you out of your data due to non-payment in any situation. If AxCrypt goes bust or our servers are unavailable for whatever reason, you can still install and run AxCrypt and decrypt and in most cases work with your files just like normal. Only the Premium features may not be available in this situation – but they are never required to decrypt your files.
Just try disconnecting your Internet connection to verify this.
Hello George,
No, not a problem at all.
Hello Extensis,
Sorry – if the data was never written to disk, but was cached in memory when the PC crashed, it’s simply not there!
Hello Nordine,
Are you using AxCrypt for macOS? For the Mac, the free version is a viewer only.
If you are using a Windows PC, something else is causing the problem and we’d need more information to determine the cause.
See https://forum.axcrypt.net/pricing/ for details about what is included with Free vs. Premium.
Hello Extensis,
What must have happened is that the file was still in operating system cache memory when the computer bluescreened, so the data was never actually written to disk – but the encrypted file was removed, because AxCrypt was done with the process.
Hello Extensis,
What version of AxCrypt is that?
In any case, that should not happen. While decrypting – the original encrypted file should be untouched. Then the output should be flushed to disk, and finally the decrypted file will be partially wiped and then deleted.
Since you mention a temp file, that indicates that you’re using version 1 of AxCrypt which is no longer supported since quite some time.
Can you give more details about the files, sizes, dates, and names (at least the extensions, you can replace ‘your filename’ with something else).
Unfortunately, if a PC crashes at just the wrong time after a lot of disk writing, there’s always a slight risk of something going permanently wrong. This happens in extreme cases with all software, especially when the system is optimized for speed (which user PC’s typically are with write caching enabled for example).
Hello Keith,
First of all, ensure you have the latest version installed. If you do, or this does not solve the issue, please contact support and include a full error report, as described here https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .
