Hello Margot,
Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response
The error message indicates that the file simply is not an AxCrypt file – it checks the first 16 bytes for a unique value.
This might be happened, because of you are trying to open/decrypt the AxCrypt secure deleted files. Those files will not be recoverable.
Most often, this error occurs because the file is not produced by AxCrypt. It can also happen when users mistakenly rename non-AxCrypt files to end with .axx, in which case renaming back to it’s appropriate extension will fix the issue since the file was never encrypted in the first place in this scenario.
Another scenario is that it is a left-over after a previous decryption was interrupted at the stage where the original is overwritten. The most common reason for this happening is that the file was damaged because of early removal of a USB drive, or a disconnected network drive.
If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.
But we have a feature called Try Broken File. You can able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.
Now you can able to see the Debug the menu in the AxCrypt app. From the debug menu you have to select Try Broken File.
Now you will be prompted for file selection. Select the corrupted encrypted file and then AxCrypt will try to decrypt the file. If successfully decrypted, then you are able to see the decrypted file in the location. Otherwise sorry to say, AxCrypt can’t decrypt that file.
Hello Paul,
AxCrypt does not support pre-boot encryption. AxCrypt is a file encryption software, not a disk encryption software.
AxCrypt is only limited by available hard disk space. If you have enough space, then you can encrypt the full drive. But based on the system configuration AxCrypt will work as much as faster
Encrypting folders and files required to boot or run your operating system or any other program is highly discouraged and can prevent access to your OS or programs. Do not activate recursive encryption when encrypting folders and/or files on “C:” drive.
Because AxCrypt application also is installed in your OS(C) drive only. But you can encrypt folders(other than system files) inside the C drive.

Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response.
AxCrypt is a file encryption software with AES 128 & 256 bits.
We have to sign in to AxCrypt app with the AxCrypt account credentials to encrypt your files.
Use the secure(+ plus) icon or File | Secure from the AxCrypt app and then choose the file(s) which you want to encrypt.
or
In windows explorer, Select the file(s) which you want to encrypt and right click on the selected files and choose the right click context menu option AxCrypt | Encrypt.
Please check out our video tutorials at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSoXBjq6iCG5232fHoWStA and our other documentation at https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/get-started/ to get started with AxCrypt.
Hello Orkan,
Without Premium in AxCrypt Mac version, you are able to decrypt and view the encrypted files. But you can’t able to encrypt more new files. If you want to encrypt more new files, then you need AxCrypt Premium.
or
It might be happened because of some firewall/antivirus or other third party applications are blocking the AxCrypt app. So please check the firewall or other software settings.
Please delete the folder (%LocalAppData%\AxCrypt(C:\Users\’User Name’\AppData\Local\AxCrypt) to clear the local cache and starts the AxCrypt app like a new.
Then uninstall the AxCrypt app and install the latest version of the AxCrypt app. You can download the same from our official website: https://forum.axcrypt.net/download/ .
Now install the AxCrypt app and try to start AxCrypting……
Now you can encrypt/decrypt the file without any issue.
If the above does not help, please provide more information.
Still your are facing any issue, So please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net . you can send a screenshot showing where the problem is, it often helps us understand.
How to take a screenshot on your PC is explained here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13776/windows-use-snipping-tool-to-capture-screenshots .

April 23, 2019 at 14:29 in reply to: Program leaving files in a UNencrypted state; & Mobile app can't encrypt #13547Hello Anonymous,
We have already responded the Query please refer the below link.
April 23, 2019 at 14:22 in reply to: Axcrypt leaves many files visible (UNencrypted) even when program exited #13546Hello Steve,
The location(C:\Users\’user name’\AppData\Local\AxCrypt) is for the temporary decrypted copies of the files. Those will either be cleaned automatically at the earliest opportunity or when you click the red clean “broom” icon in AxCrypt.
AxCrypt works by decrypting files temporarily and then launching the appropriate application for the decrypted file, which thus is entirely unaware of AxCrypt. AxCrypt monitors the system for the launched app to exit, and when it detects this it will re-encrypt the file and wipe (overwrite) the decrypted file and then delete it.
Please note: We have to close all the instance of the opened application to re-encrypt the files and clear the local cache.
Anyway, we will discuss with our team to alter/add extra feature to handle the temp files.
April 23, 2019 at 14:14 in reply to: When might AXCRYPT MOBILE (for Android & iOS) allow encyption of files? #13545Hello Steve,
We do have a plan to develop mobile encryption or update encrypted files on mobile devices. But based on our developers availability, it will get released soon.
Sorry to say, We are not sure when we are going to do. But we will do the same in near future.
But user feedback has told us that viewing encrypted files produced on the desktop is the most commonly requested function so we’re getting that out the door first!
April 23, 2019 at 14:07 in reply to: Previously encrypted files won't open after AxCrypt premium trial #13544Hello fatin,
AxCrypt will not change the contents of the encrypting/encrypted files. It just create a exact duplicate of the file and it will work on the file headers, footers and metadata. So except user’s request AxCrypt will not change the contents of the encrypted files.
Also please check whether you are opening the exact file or some other?
If you have any doubts, please create a test text file, add contents in that. Finally encrypt the same and after that open the file. Now you will see the exact contents of the file. You can also update the contents of the encrypted files.
It might be because of the opened file is pending for re-encryption. Please check the AxCrypt local cache path(C:\Users\”UserName”\AppData\Local\AxCrypt) and find the updated file. If not available, then you didn’t saved the contents of the file or you are opening wrong file. Please check carefully.
If we open the encrypted file and updated the contents of the files. But we closed the AxCrypt app when the opened application is not closed. That time the updated file will be available in our local cache. We have to close the opened application properly and click the broom icon to re-encrypt the pending files.
Also please make sure that you are using the latest version of AxCrypt app.
Hello Pablo,
You can use AxCrypt app to secure your asset files. So without the file password, nobody can open the encrypted files. Whenever you want to see that file, just decrypt the same using the AxCrypt app.
Please note: AxCrypt encrypted files should have an .axx file extension and it will be opened and decrypted only with the AxCrypt app.
If the above does not help, Sorry to say we didn’t get the exact issue. So please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net .
If you can send a screenshot showing where the problem is, it often helps us understand.
Hello Dharmandra,
AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.
Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.
If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://forum.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/ . Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this
If you do not remember the password to your account, you can always reset it. This is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files. Go to https://account.axcrypt.net/Home/PasswordReset to do this, or you can also go there from AxCrypt with File | Options | Password Reset.
For more info about Password change and reset: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/
AxCrypt is file encryption with no backdoor, that means AxCrypt do not store user’s account password, anywhere.
Please note: Always take a regular backup or keep a separate copy of your important files.
Hello Gary,
It may be because of some third party applications or any firewalls(like antivirus software and etc) are blocking the AxCrypt application and its files. So please checkout those applications or firewall(antivirus) settings.
Please check which version(AxCrypt 1.x and AxCrypt 2.x) of AxCrypt app you are using? if you are using both the versions, please uninstall the AxCrypt 1.x.
Also check your operating system pending updates. If any available, please update it. or try to install the latest version(above v4.5) of dot net framework.
If the above does not help, please provide detailed information(including complete error report also) about the issue and send to our support(support@axcrypt.net).
Please avoid sending the same query in more than one mediums. You might be getting duplicate responses.
Hello Raymond,
Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response.
AxCrypt 1.x can create self decryptable .exe files. Due to some security issues, AxCrypt 2.x do not support that features. For more info, Please refer the blog: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/avoid-self-decrypting-files/
AxCrypt 2.x is not a ransomware generating software and it’s a file encryption software.
Instead of using AxCrypt 1.x self decryptable .exe files, we can use the stand alone version of the AxCrypt app which does not required the installation process.
You can download the AxCrypt to run it temporarily without installing using our portable(stand-alone) version, here: https://forum.axcrypt.net/download/ .
Hello Hugh,
You had mentioned “Somehow or other my login password got changed; I’ve no idea how that happened.” , AxCrypt will not change sign in password automatically. You might be confused with sign in password and file password.
AxCrypt 1.x works with different passwords for each files. That means, we can assign passwords for each encrypting files. But AxCrypt 2.x use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password then you have to enter the file password(which was used to encrypt the files) while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file.
For example: AxCrypt will ask the user to enter the password when the file was encrypted by some other AxCrypt accounts’ password or user account’s old password.
Actually, without user request, AxCrypt will not change the user accounts password. So you might be manually changed the account password or confused with the file password.
Anyway, its good to know now everything works well.
Hello Marc,
AxCrypt application and account required to decrypt/open the AxCrypt encrypted files. Without the AxCrypt app we can’t open the encrypted files.
Only the person sharing the encrypted file needs the premium version – the recipient(s) can quite happily use the free version to decrypt/view the file.
Hello Jay West,
AxCrypt 2 does not support specific password for specific files. Also AxCrypt 2 now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
AxCrypt Key Sharing is a Premium(paid) feature. But you can use it as a free via Key Management.
AxCrypt app having the feature called Key Management. Using this feature, you can export your public keys and import some other AxCrypt user’s public keys to share the encrypted file to others.
You can export your public sharing key from the AxCrypt app menu File | Key Management | Export My Public Sharing Key.
After exporting your public key, you need to send the key file to the 3rd party peoples(who is going to share and send the file with you).
Now 3rd party people need to import your public key file to their AxCrypt app using the menu option File | Key Management | Import Someone’s Public Sharing Key.
Now they are able to share the encrypted file with you using our Key Sharing feature.
There is no need to share passwords in order to send or share files securely with others. AxCrypt has a key sharing feature letting you add recipients by email address, who when they receive the file can open it with their own AxCrypt password.
Key sharing embeds the shared key into the file. The file must thus first be key shared with the recipient, then sent or file shared. Please note that AxCrypt does not share or send the actual file.
To see a quick instructional video explaining how to use key sharing, please view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z3KOZD-Yks
Note that the person you’re sending the file has to use AxCrypt 2 with the email address you shared the file.
If you don’t like the AxCrypt 2.x app, then you can use the old version of Axcrypt app.
We are stopped developing new features and fixing issues for the legacy version(AxCrypt 1.x). So we will suggest you to use the AxCrypt 2.x app.
