September 25, 2019 at 08:04 in reply to: How can I make use of export/import public sharing key or Axcrpyt ID ? #14393
Hello JH,
You can send the encrypted file via email(Gmail, yahoo, etc..) to other users.
If they want to open the received encrypted file then we have to share the file password(which was used in the file encryption – the AxCrypt account password) with them or the files should be key shared with receivers’ email addresses. AxCrypt application is mandatory is decrypt the encrypted files.
If we do not want to share the password with others, then please use AxCrypt key sharing feature after encrypting the files. Let me explain more about the key sharing feature,
There is no need to share passwords in order to send or share files securely with others.AxCrypt has a key sharing feature letting you add recipients by email address, who when they receive the file can open it with their own AxCrypt password.
Key sharing embeds the shared key into the file. The file must thus first be key shared with the recipient, then sent or file shared. Please note that AxCrypt does not share or send the actual file. To see a quick instructional video explaining how to use key sharing, please view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z3KOZD-Yks .
Sharing a secured file is made directly from the AxCrypt software by choosing the secured file, click the share button and simply select the team member you want to share it to. The recipient just needs a free AxCrypt ID and will be automatically invited via email if necessary. The invitation email contains instructions on how to view and edit the file.
Hello Tom,
If both the computers are connected with the internet, then you can open/decrypt the encrypted files with both the old and new passwords.
If your main system is not connected with the internet(means offline state), Then still, you can use the old password to sign in and open the encrypted files.
Password change will get detected, once you signed in to the AxCrypt app with internet-enabled.
Still, you can sign in to the AxCrypt app with your old password in your main system – AxCrypt local status. AxCrypt app warns you with local mode warning text to change the app status to local – when you used the old password to sign in.
As explained earlier, We can open the encrypted files with both the passwords.
If the local app cache is not cleared, then you can use the old password to sign in to the AxCrypt app. But you can open the encrypted files with both the old and new passwords.
Also, AxCrypt will work as you said in the quoted text.
Hello Anonymous,
Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response.
Apologies for the inconvenience.

AxCrypt 2 now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
AxCrypt 2 works just like your email software or most other password-protected systems. You sign in once and remain signed in until signed out. Just like you can read many emails without entering the password every time, AxCrypt will do the same. The files are still encrypted, but your password is remembered until you sign out of AxCrypt.
AxCrypt stays signed in until signed out. Once signed in, you can read, write and update information without having to re-enter the password, until signed out.
If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, then you have to enter the file password while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file. that is the reason AxCrypt asked for password.
Hello Kbarb,
Sorry to say, AxCrypt do not support the option to change the install location.
Hello Tom,
It may or may not be AxCrypt password protected Excel spreadsheet(s) also have its own password.
If the user protected the file with the password in excel and after that the same is encrypted with the AxCrypt, the file needs both the password to view the contents.
So it will be based on users choice. I think, its better use any one of the two options. AxCrypt will encrypt the complete file and changed to .axx file.
Excel just protects the file with the password but still the files are in excel file extensions only.
AxCrypt encrypted files should have a file extension “.axx”as per our design. Also, default application for the file type “.axx” should be AxCrypt app only.
AxCrypt app only can open and interpret the contents the AxCrypt encrypted files (with the .axx extension). No other applications can do this. Because we do have our own design and file structure.
Hello Kbarb,
The Windows Installer technology uses Msiexec.exe for installing MSI and MSP packages. AxCrypt app setup files are .exe and i think, MSIExec will not support the exe files.
You can just double click the AxCrypt setup.exe files to start the AxCrypt installation process.
AxCrypt 2.x is written in C#/.NET.(.NET is required to run AxCrypt software). Please check dot net framework 4.5 or above installed in your system? If not please install the same. You can download the dot net framework here, https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30653
It might be happened because of some firewall/antivirus or other third-party applications are blocking the AxCrypt app. So please check the firewall or other software settings.
Still, you are not able install the app, please provide more details and complete error report to support@axcrypt.net.
For complete error report, https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .
September 17, 2019 at 17:04 in reply to: Is double clicking file to decrypt a security flaw if file captured by malware? #14368Hello David,
Yes, you are missing.
AxCrypt 2.x will not work without AxCrypt account. Email address is required to use the AxCrypt 2.x app. Without AxCrypt account, you cannot encrypt/decrypt the files in AxCrypt 2.x.
AxCrypt 2 asks you to sign in to your account, which AxCrypt 1 did not. We now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files. The password that you’re being asked for is the password to your account, which you probably created when you first installed AxCrypt 1.
AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. In addition to that, 2.x implements of lot of new rich features, while some functions of 1.x are deprecated. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x.You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same system.
If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, which often is the case directly after upgrading to version 2, you will be prompted for that original password. If the file was encrypted with version 1, it will then be automatically upgraded to version 2 and to use the new sign in password which means you won’t be prompted again for the old password.
Still, you can open/decrypt the old encrypted files with the original file password(which was used in the file encryption process).
Please check out our video tutorials at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSoXBjq6iCG5232fHoWStA and our other documentation at https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/get-started/ to get started with AxCrypt.
If the above does not help,Please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net .
September 17, 2019 at 16:54 in reply to: Opening file receive error folder in temp is not empty, folder doesn't exist #14367Hello Bryan,
Sorry to say, we unfortunately do not support version 1.x, it is obsolete and unsupported since several years.
Most commonly such issues are caused by %TEMP% being mapped to network drives, or having permissions problems.
Hello Kbarb
We do not offer the option to change the install location. The reason is that too many users choose unsuitable locations, such as removable drives. For power users it is still possible to override by extracting the MSI and setting the parameter there.
This issue is a somewhat related to this post https://forum.axcrypt.net/forums/topic/silent-installation/ .
The basic command is MSIExec /i [path_to_and_name_of_MSI] INSTALLDIR=”[required_installation_folder_goes here]” [other arguments] . Google msiexec for more details.
Hello Nicole ,
Can I encrypt different files with different passwords? – Sorry to say, AxCrypt 2.x does not support different password for different files feature due to some security reasons. Please refer our blog for more info: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/ .
Can be the encryption of the files other then my login password? — No, AxCrypt 2.x use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
Hello ANTOINE,

Actually, you changed the sing in password of your AxCrypt account. Now, You can use the changed account password to sign in with the AxCrypt app and account site(http://account.axcrypt.net/).

Please note: I suggest you use the ‘show password’ option in the app and ensure that what is type is truly identical.
Happy AxCrypting…… Have a great day :)
Hello serdar,
Yes, you can reset the password(passphrase) in the below ways.
Click to Link: https://account.axcrypt.net/Home/PasswordReset to do this, or you can also go there from AxCrypt app with File | Options | Password Reset.
Password reset is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files.
For more info about Password Reset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6whtjSb3pc and https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/
Hello Anonymous,
You might be used your old AxCrypt password(which is different from the one that is exists in our account server) to sign in to the AxCrypt app.
If users used an old AxCrypt account password to sign in with the AxCrypt app, then the AxCrypt app will warn the user and allow user to enter in local mode.
You can also use the AxCrypt app in local mode. But the currently used sign in password will be used to encrypt the files. We do not suggest the users to use it in local mode, unless any special cases.
So, Please use your latest password to sign in with the AxCrypt app without any issues. If the AxCrypt app is opened in offline state, then change the status from offline to online by enabling the internet connection in your system.
If you enabled the offline mode manually then please disable the that also.
Or
Please try to clear the AxCrypt local contents by clicking the Reset button in the sign in dialog or via the AxCrypt file menu File | Options | Clear All Settings & Restart.
Then uninstall the AxCrypt app and install the latest version of the AxCrypt app. You can download the same from our official website: https://forum.axcrypt.net/download/ .
Now install the AxCrypt app(with internet connection) and try to start AxCrypt with internet enabled.
Hello P Towner,
AxCrypt performs as much as faster based on the user’s system configuration and the number of files, its size. When encrypting bulk amount of files or larger files, AxCrypt will take some more time to finish the encryption/decryption.
We are going to start working on the App optimization issues. So users will get the optimized version of the AxCrypt app in near future.
If the above does not help,Please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net .
You can also send the complete error report to troubleshoot the issue. Please follow the detailed instructions to take the complete error report: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ . so that we will try to troubleshoot the same as soon as possible.
