    Hello Duncan,

Your issues are a bit unusual. However, we’ve just released a new build (2.1.1393) which addresses some timing and other issues that may affect your experience.

Please try it out, and if you’re still having problems, I’d really appreciate screen shots of the situation.

    Regards

    Svante

    Hello,

Sorry, your post got hidden by the attempted thread hijack…

I’m not sure if I understand, but there is an annoying bug that causes the first launch of a document after entering the password fail. Or, rather, if you’re signed out, and then double-click in Windows Explorer then AxCrypt is opened and you’re asked to enter the password. You do, and then nothing happens. If you double-click again it opens.

    Is this what you’re seeing?

    Hello!

As you also sent in a support e-mail, we’ve already initiated a response there, so we’ll say no more here.

    Hello!

I have two suggestions in fact!

    1) Try the new version 2 AxCrypt! Download from http://www.axcrypt.net/ .

    2) Note that the AxCrypt 1.x dialog has two checkboxes. “Remember this for Decryption” and “Remember this for Encryption“. According to your question, you have checked the box for Decryption, and you ask why it’s not ‘taking’ when you Encrypt. Try checking the other checkbox to set a default for Encryption!

Yes, it can be a bit confusing, that’s why we’ve remade this completely in version 2, and made it so you’ll only ever really be using one password, and it’s remembered for encryption as well as for decryption while you’re signed in.

    Hello Omveer,

Please try not to triple post, it just takes up time and resources we could be using to help you! See http://www.axcrypt.net/forums/topic/latest-version-installed-but-crashes-on-login/ . The net effect being slower, not faster, response time!

    Hello,

Thank you for reporting this. The problem occurs because EditPad is a multi-document editor, and the way it handles this tricks AxCrypt into believing the file is no longer used when you open a text file when EditPad is already open.

We’ll be working on a fix for this asap, in the meantime, the workaround is to ensure that EditPad is fully closed before opening another document. Sorry for the inconvenience, we’ll try to have a new build out very soon.

Once again, thank you for reporting this! As a small token of appreciation and perhaps consolation, I’ve added another month of Premium to your AxCrypt ID account.

    Hello,

Can you please do try the following:

    1. Ensure AxCrypt is stopped.
    2. Using Windows Explorer, go to %localappdata%\axcrypt\ .
    3. E-mail all .txt files in that folder (UserSettings.txt etc etc) to me: svante dot seleborg at axcrypt dot net . (There is nothing especially sensitive there, at most your e-mail-address and names of encrypted files.)
    4. Delete all .txt files.
    5. Re-start AxCrypt.

    Hello,

How is your file server accessed from Windows Explorer? AxCrypt uses the normal mechanism to browse networks as well as the local PC.

When you add a secured folder you’ll get a “Browse for Folder” dialog similar to the following:

Just expand the Network node, or the This PC node if the network is mapped as a drive. You can also drag and drop folders into the Secured Folders tab.

    Hello!

The keyfile feature is only implemented for backward compatibility with AxCrypt 1.7 – so you can open files encrypted then with a keyfile.

We’ve decided not to implemented this feature, because it has caused some problems with very small benefits. You can choose to use a very good password instead – why not use a string similar to what’s in the keyfile for example? Exactly the same level of security.

The problem with keyfiles are that they need to be stored somewhere, and it’s very hard to ensure this is done properly.

We may in the future support various hardware tokens instead.

    Best regards,

    Svante

    Hello Duncan!

Since you’re saying double-click doesn’t work, I’m also guessing the file icon is not our fine AxCrypt icon, but just a blank.

If so, this indicates that you have not *installed* AxCrypt, but you’re running the portable version.

On the download page, you’ll find 3 different downloads. You’ll want the .MSI (Full Installer) version for 64-bit (most people nowadays are running 64-bit operating systems, if by chance you don’t pick the 32-bit .MSI).

If you’ve downloaded the .EXE version, that does not install anything into Windows, including double-click association etc. But it is very convenient to have on a USB-stick for example, so you can bring to computers that does not have AxCrypt installed.

    Hello,

If you send me an email at support at axcrypt dot net specifying what e-mail-address you’re using, I’ll check our logs and see what’s happened. Some e-mail-providers are notorious in throwing away e-mail, and it’s also happened that users have misspelled their e-mail-address ;-)

    Hello Bernie,

Even if you only use AxCrypt for your personal use and never share anything with anyone, those features that allow you to do so should not be in the way.

Key files are only supported for backward compatibility with AxCrypt 1.x, and will not be used or mentioned once you have converted to AxCrypt 2. Not sure why you mention them…

There is an update to AxCrypt 2 available that makes it easier to migrate from the old to the new. Please try it out!

In AxCrypt 2, the “clear passphrase” function is called “Sign Out”, and is available under the File menu. Also, AxCrypt 2 will automatically sign out if the screen saver becomes active, you log out of your Windows session, the computer goes to sleep or is shut down.

The point here is that you should never walk away from your computer without at least a password protected screen saver being active.

    Best regards,

    Svante

    Hello,

This scenario with multiple users should be handled like any multi-user scenario in Windows. With different Windows accounts. There are a zillion different reasons why this is the way to go, and not for us to try to isolate different users in the same Windows session.

That being said, we will be adding limited multi-user support later, but not for this scenario, but rather for the scenarion where one physical person has several AxCrypt ID accounts for whatever reason.

    Hello Duncan,

Can you update your software to 2.1.1392 and try again?

If you do get the same message, please first to the File menu, select Options, and then Debug.

You’ll get a new Debug menu.

In the Debug menu, select “Open Error Report Snapshot”.

A text editor should open. Follow the instructions there.

    Thank you!
