  • in reply to: Encrypting a folder rather than the files in it #13476

    Hello Kaushik,

Yes, If the encrypted files/folders do not exist in the AxCrypt app’s Recent Files/Secured Folders list also, The encrypted files/folders are still encrypted only. Those will be restored back to normal once we decrypt it.

But AxCrypt app will not monitor the encrypted files/folders which do not exist in the AxCrypt app’s Recent Files/Secured Folders list. That means broom icon feature will not work for the unmonitored folders and files.

AxCrypt will re-encrypt the files once you update the encrypted files.

    Broom icon feature:

If the file, in fact, is located in a folder designated as “Secured”, it will soon be re-encrypted again since those folders are monitored for unencrypted files and will encrypt them when you sign out or click the “Broom” clean up icon.

AxCrypt 2 uses a more robust method for the automatic re-encryption, which sometimes means you as the user have to tell AxCrypt to do it. You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.

    Hello tinman,

AxCrypt app settings will differ from the systems/machines, not based on the AxCrypt account. You can locate the folder by navigating to the path C:\Users\’your system username’\AppData\Local\AxCrypt.

For the first question: Yes, you have to close the opened files and its corresponding applications in both the machines(based on the opened files – may be only in machine 1 or machine 2 or both machines). Then only AxCrypt can re-encrypt the files.

For example: If you modify the contents in machine1 with the AxCrypt app, you have to close the opened file with its corresponding opened application in machine1 to re-encrypt the opened file.

For the second question: As I said earlier, AxCrypt app settings will differ from the systems. So AxCrypt app will not get confused when you duplicate the secured folder list on both machines.

    Hello Doug,

You are right. AxCrypt app will get signed out after some minutes(based on the configured minutes) of inactivity.

Inactivity Sign Out Options are disabled if you are not signed in to the AxCrypt app. After signing in to the AxCrypt app, Inactivity Sign Out Options will get enabled.

Just sign in to the AxCrypt app with your account credentials. Now check the Inactivity Sign Out Options.

As you know, Inactivity Sign Out is a premium feature.

    Hello Jaime,

Email address is not a problem here. You can change your AxCrypt account/ID’s email address to new email address or you can also create a new AxCrypt account with your new email address.

To change the account email, sign in to https://account.axcrypt.net/en/Home/Login and then under Settings | Email, set the new email.

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption, not the used email address.

Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.

If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://forum.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/ . Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this.

If you do not remember the password to your account, you can always reset it. This is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files. Go to https://account.axcrypt.net/Home/PasswordReset to do this, or you can also go there from AxCrypt with File | Options | Password Reset.

    Hello Raymond,

Without an internet connection, AxCrypt key sharing will not allow the user to type/write the email address of others.

AxCrypt desktop application will communicate with our API service to get the key sharing recipient’s public key information. So the internet required to communicate with our API service.

If the internet is not available, We can use Key Management(Export/Import public keys) feature to key share the file.

    Hello Jaime,

Please read the forum link for the detailed information about your query,  https://forum.axcrypt.net/forums/topic/error-inflating-invalid-stored-block-lengths/#post-7334 . In that forum, our lead developer Svante had explained the issue.

After reading the forum response, please read the below.

AxCrypt app does have a verify file functionality in the latest version. You can use the same to verify the file structure.

First, you have to enable debug menu to use the verify file functionality via File | Options | enable Debug.

Then use the Check File submenu from the Debug menu to verify the file structure.

You can also try the Try Broken File submenu from the Debug menu, to recover the corrupted file.

    Hello Jari,

The file is a left-over after the previous decryption was interrupted at the stage where the original is overwritten. The most common reason for this happening is that the file was damaged because of early removal of a USB drive, or a disconnected network drive.

If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.

I think this is not because of the latest version of AxCrypt app.

    Hello BOYER,

The error message states, the encrypted file which you are trying to open does not exist in the location. Means the file is not downloaded completed.

Just download the file from remote service to your mobile/tablet.

Now open the AxCrypt app and then open the file via the unlock icon.

Still, you are facing the same exception, please write a mail to support@axcrypt.net with detailed information like which device you are using? which operating system? AxCrypt app version? Does file name contain any special characters? and etc..

    Hello Chris,

Google has access to files on its servers. But it can’t read the ACrypt encrypted file(.axx extension files) contents. Because .axx extension files can be opened with the AxCrypt app only. Google does not support the .axx fil extension. That means we can’t read/open the encrypted in google drive. We have to download the file locally and then decrypt/open it with the AxCrypt app.

AxCrypt is file encryption with no backdoor. Please do not forget the file password(which was used in the file encryption) to decrypt the encrypted files.

in reply to: Encryption Security With Version 1.7.3201.0 vs Version 2.x #13311

    Hello Steve,

Yes, AxCrypt-1.7.3201.0 is the last stable version of 1.x. You can also check the same using our legacy website http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/LegacyDownloads.html .

The data encryption primitive is AES-128 or AES-256 in AxCrypt 2, while it’s always AES-128 in AxCrypt 1.

We use SHA-512 for two things – an HMAC, that’s a cryptographically strong checksum that ensures that we can be sure that nothing in the encrypted file has been changed. We also use it for password derivation – this is a process whereby we take a variable length typed password, and produce a fixed length (128 or 256-bit as the need be) value to use for the actual encryption algorithm. It’s essentially just another representation of the typed password, and we never store this anywhere.

Please read up on the full details here: http://www.axcrypt.net/documentation/technical/ .

Also, please check our security page, https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/security/ .

SHA stands for Secure Hashing Algorithm. SHA-1 and SHA-2 are two different versions of that algorithm. They differ in both constructions (how the resulting hash is created from the original data) and in the bit-length of the signature. Primarily, people focus on the bit-length as the important distinction. SHA-1 is a 160-bit hash. SHA-2 is actually a “family” of hashes and comes in a variety of lengths, the most popular being 256-bit.

Please read to know the difference between the SHA 1 and SHA 2, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-2#Comparison_of_SHA_functions

    Hello Kalev,

This might be because of some pending temporary decrypted files exist in your AxCrypt local cache folder and recent file list also.

You can stop the error messages by clearing the AxCrypt local cache by File | Options | Clear All Settings & Restart.

Now AxCrypt app will be opened like a freshly installed app. Then sign in with your AxCrypt account credentials.

    Start AxCrypting……

Still, if you are facing any issues, please feel free to contact our support(support@axcrypt.net) with detailed information about the issue.

    Hello Letitia,

Please send complete information about the issue and the ReportSnapshot.txt  file to support@axcrypt.net.

You can find the ReportSnapshot.txt in the /Users/User Name/.local/share/AxCrypt . Use the finder and type ~/.local/AxCrypt to locate the AxCrypt local folder.

Also, check whether the user account has necessary access(admin rights) or not?

    Hello Paul,

Password Reset is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files.

After resetting your AxCrypt account with a new password, We will get access to the AxCrypt account server and application too. But We can’t decrypt the old encrypted with the new password.

But still, we can decrypt/open the old AxCrypt encrypted files with the file password(which was used in the file encryption).

Both the versions(1.x & 2.x) of AxCrypt application will not allow the users to decrypt/open the encrypted file(s) without knowing the file password.

And the firewall blocks the AxCrypt app – Firewalls will block the applications/software based on how it was configured. So please check the firewall configuration. There is no problem with the AxCrypt app.

Please note: Always take a regular backup or keep a separate copy of your important files.

    Hello Mark,

AxCrypt does not support the specific path, file name, folder name, or both are too long(more than the default size) as per the Windows operating system policies. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.

    Hello Jay,

AxCrypt is a user mode software. We can uninstall the software using the control panel in windows.

If AxCrypt installed in the system then we can the find the same in the control panel. AxCrypt app will not exist in the control panel list of installed programs if the AxCrypt app was not installed.

Please note: We can keep AxCrypt encrypted files without having the AxCrypt app also. But AxCrypt app required to decrypt/open the AxCrypt encrypted files.

If any other queries, please feel free to contact AxCrypt support via support@axcrypt.net .
