    Hello Pete,

AxCrypt is a file encryption software. AxCrypt 2 now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files. Sorry to say, It does not support a specific password(s) for specific file(s) feature due to some security reasons.

I will suggest to use two different AxCrypt accounts to achieve the same where one is for your personal use and another is for your family.

We can switch between AxCrypt accounts by clearing the local app cache in the AxCrypt app. To do the same just navigating to the AxCrypt app menu options(File | Options | Clear All Settings & Restart) or click the Reset button in the AxCrypt app sign in dialog.

    Hello CM,

    AxCrypt Secured Folder:

AxCrypt secures files, individually. However, you can designate folders as ‘secured’. The folders will be monitored for new files, and AxCrypt will secure all new files with a single click, or when you sign out.

You can also select multiple files, including all files in a folder, to be secured in a single operation. They still remain individual files, and the folder itself is not secured, just the files in it.

If the file in fact is located in a folder designated as “Secured”, it will soon be re-encrypted again since those folders are monitored for unencrypted files and will encrypt them when you sign out, or click the “Broom” clean up icon.

AxCrypt 2 uses a more robust method for the automatic re-encryption, which sometimes means you as the user have to tell AxCrypt to do it. You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.

    Include Subfolders:

You can encrypt a folder by using Secured Folders option. After that if you create a subfolder, it won’t re-encrypt the files of subfolder(s).

We can include the sub-folder by enabling the feature from the AxCrypt app menu File | Options | Include Subfolders. By default Include Subfolders will be disabled. So Sub-folders are not encrypted without enabling this feature.

How to secure (encrypt) the Folder?

You can able to encrypt your folder contents by just drag and drop the folder to the Secured Folders area.

    or

Select the folder and right click on the folder and select the AxCrypt | Encrypt menu option from the windows explorer context menu.

    Hello Rob,

AxCrypt can encrypt most of the file types. Also some file types AxCrypt will not encrypt due to security reasons.

You can encrypted the image file with AxCrypt app. But AxCrypt app do not encrypted thumbnails files.

AxCrypt will not encrypt any system, hidden files and operating system installed drives/folder. So please avoid securing that kind of folders.

Because AxCrypt encrypted files will have a special file extension .axx and those will be opened only with the AxCrypt app.

If the above does not help, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net . you can send a screenshot showing where the problem is, it often helps us understand.

    Hello Patrick ,

With AxCrypt Premium, use of our mobile apps on any number of devices is included. The mobile apps are intended to complement the desktop application, by allowing files encrypted on the desktop to be opened and viewed on any mobile device.

Just to be clear, our mobile apps do not yet have the capability to encrypt or update encrypted files on mobile devices. We will implement mobile encryption, but user feedback has told us that viewing encrypted files produced on the desktop is the most commonly requested function so we’re getting that out the door first!

To view the encrypted files in your mobiles device, Sign in to the AxCrypt mobile app and click the unlock icon(on the top right corner) and then select the file from your mobile device or any cloud services like Google Drive, OneDrive and etc.

When we are trying to open any file(s) from OneDrive or other cloud services, the file will be downloaded to the user’s mobile or local storage. After that the downloaded file will be opened in the corresponding application(AxCrypt, Pdf viewer or etc.).

Sorry to say, We do not have Axcrypt mobile app videos.

    Hello Yves,

AxCrypt works by decrypting files temporarily and then launching the appropriate application for the decrypted file, which thus is entirely unaware of AxCrypt.

Creating temporary files will take a while based on the file size and user’s system configuration. For example: If the file size is 200MB or more, then it will be opened in another few minutes. It will take more or less similar time of when we copy the same sized file from one location to another.

AxCrypt monitors the system for the launched app to exit, and when it detects this it will re-encrypt the file and wipe (overwrite) the decrypted file and then delete it.

If you have a good system configuration, then please write a mail to support@axcrypt.net with detailed report. Please follow the detailed instructions here to take the complete error report: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .

    Hello Don,

If I upgrade to AxCrypt2, I must do that on all my personal windows machines correct?

Its not mandatory to update the AxCrypt 2. But We are stopped developing new features and fixing issues for the legacy version(AxCrypt 1.x). So we will suggest you to use the AxCrypt 2.x app.

I also use the Android version on our two phones, will the current version be able to read the new files or do I have to update those also?

You can able to  read the new files in AxCrypt mobile app. Our mobile apps do not yet have the capability to encrypt or update encrypted files on mobile devices.

    Hello Bernard,

Why AxCrypt keeps unencrypted copies of files for weeks?? And to make it really easy in AxCrypt folder? Why users don’t know anything about it?

AxCrypt works by decrypting files temporarily and then launching the appropriate application for the decrypted file, which thus is entirely unaware of AxCrypt. AxCrypt monitors the system for the launched app to exit, and when it detects this it will re-encrypt the file and wipe(overwrite) the decrypted file and then delete it.

AxCrypt will create a random temporary folder under the specified path to keep the decrypted copy of the encrypted file. The location(C:\Users\’user name’ \AppData\Local\AxCrypt) is for the temporary decrypted copies of the files. Those will either be cleaned automatically at the earliest opportunity or when you click the red clean “broom” icon in AxCrypt.

Note: The temporary files will be removed as soon as the opened encrypted file closed/signed out from the AxCrypt app.

AxCrypt 2 uses a more robust method for the automatic re-encryption, which sometimes means you as the user have to tell AxCrypt to do it. You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.

Now the AxCrypt app do not allow the users to exit the AxCrypt app when the encrypted files are opened/pending for re-encryption.

    Hello cisco,

I think, there is no problem with the AxCrypt app. This might be happened because of some other typewriting plugins or extension software which you have been used in your device/system.

So please try to remove/disable the extension/plugins in your system and then start AxCrypting.

Yes, You can use AxCrypt app.

AxCrypt is file security software with 128-bit or 256-bit AES strong encryption. You can use AxCrypt as free in your windows system with limited features. If you want to use some additional premium features or mobile apps or Mac app, then you have to purchase our premium subscription.

AxCrypt offers a 30-day trial of AxCrypt Premium subscription. After 30 days, AxCrypt do not auto subscribe the Premium Subscription, instead Premium trial will be reverted into Freemium.

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

AxCrypt is file encryption with no backdoor. If we do not know the AxCrypt file password, then nobody can able to decrypt the same.

    Hello Alex,

When the user changes the password on the website, the private key is re-encrypted with the new password.

When you change (not reset) your password for your AxCrypt ID account, *all* files previously encrypted with that AxCrypt ID account will automatically open with the new changed password.

When the user then sign-ins with the app, the local encrypted copy of the private key is updated with the new encrypted version from the server.

You can check the difference between the Password reset and change here: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/   .

Please note: Password reset and password change are not same .

    Hello Maurice,

    1. Yes, AxCrypt application and account required to decrypt/open the AxCrypt encrypted files. Without the AxCrypt app we can’t open the encrypted files.

If receiver who does not have registered AxCrypt ID, (s)he will receive an invitation email with instructions on how to proceed.

After that receiver can open the AxCrypt encrypted file in AxCrypt app with own password.(if key sharing applied.)

If you are trying to decrypt the someone’s AxCrypt encrypted file, then you needs the someone’s file password which was used for file encryption. So the someone needs to share the file password with you. Then only you are able to open the encrypted file.

To see a quick instructional video explaining how to use key sharing, please view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z3KOZD-Yks .

All the AxCrypt encrypted files should have the .axx extension as per our design. Also you need AxCrypt application to decrypt the AxCrypt encrypted files.

If the encrypted file does not have the .axx file extension, then the AxCrypt app will not decrypt the same.

    Hello Hussain,

AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x.

You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same time. If you installed both the versions of AxCrypt app (1.x & 2.x) in your system already, Please remove the old one.

This might be happened, because of you are trying to open/decrypt the AxCrypt secure deleted files. Those files will not be recoverable.

Most often, this error occurs because the file is not produced by AxCrypt. It can also happen when users mistakenly rename non-AxCrypt files to end with .axx, in which case renaming back to it’s appropriate extension will fix the issue since the file was never encrypted in the first place in this scenario.

Another scenario is that it is a left-over after a previous decryption was interrupted at the stage where the original is overwritten. The most common reason for this happening is that the file was damaged because of early removal of a USB drive, or a disconnected network drive.

If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.

But we have a feature called Try Broken File. You can able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.

Now you can able to see the Debug the menu in the AxCrypt app. From the debug menu you have to select Try Broken File.

Now you will be prompted for file selection. Select the corrupted encrypted file and then AxCrypt will try to decrypt the file. If successfully decrypted, then you are able to see the decrypted file in the location. Otherwise sorry to say, AxCrypt can’t decrypt that file.

If the above does not help, please provide more information

Still your are facing any issue, So please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net . you can send a screenshot showing where the problem is, it often helps us understand.

And also please send the complete error report with some screenshots of the exceptions, so that we will try to troubleshoot the same as soon as possible.

You can also send the complete error report to troubleshoot the issue. Please follow the detailed instructions to take the complete error report: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .
