Hello Ron,
Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.
If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://forum.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/ . Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this.
If you do not remember the password to your account, you can always reset it. This is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files. Go to https://account.axcrypt.net/Home/PasswordReset to do this, or you can also go there from AxCrypt with File | Options | Password Reset.
Hello Steven,
You can download the legacy versions of AxCrypt from the following link, http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/LegacyDownloads.html .
We are stopped developing new features and fixing issues for the legacy version(AxCrypt 1.x). So we will suggest you to use the AxCrypt 2.x app.
please check out our requirements page: https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/requirements/ .
Hello Jace,
AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.
If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, then you have to enter the file password while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file.
While viewing the encrypted file (having different password than your sign in password), you have to enter the file password. If you enter the AxCrypt account password instead of file password. So you need to enter the file password.
If you do not know the file password (which is used for encryption), kindly try to remember the same and then try to decrypt the encrypted file.

Hello Alàa,
After your Premium subscription expired, AxCrypt will convert your AxCrypt account subscription into Freemium.
If you want to continue our Premium subscription, then you have to purchase again. Without user’s interaction, AxCrypt will not renew your subscription automatically.
You are able to open/decrypt your AxCrypt Premium Encrypted(AES 256 bit) File, after the AxCrypt Premium Subscription expired also.
Without Premium in AxCrypt Windows version, you are able to encrypt(with AES-128), decrypt and view the encrypted files. Some additional functionalities only required AxCrypt Premium.
Without Premium in AxCrypt Mac version, you are able to decrypt and view the encrypted files. But you can’t able to encrypt more new files. If you want to encrypt more new files, then you need AxCrypt Premium.
The AxCrypt freemium used to access the old encrypted files(with AES 256) with AxCrypt Free subscription, then those files will be re-encrypted with AES-128.
Actually AxCrypt Premium having some unique and special features like AES-256 encryption, Key Sharing, Cloud Storage Awareness, Secured Folder, Password Management, Inactivity Sign Out, Anonymous File Names, Priority Support , Mobile Apps and Mac version.
Now you can browse our official website to know more about AxCrypt Premium features, https://forum.axcrypt.net/pricing/ .
March 11, 2019 at 08:08 in reply to: Files encrypted with AxCrypt v1.7.3156.0 cannot be decrypted with later versions #13402Hello Winston,
AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.
AxCrypt 2.x use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. In addition to that, 2.x implements of lot of new rich features, while some functions of 1.x are deprecated. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x. You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same time.
If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, which often is the case directly after upgrading to version 2, you will be prompted for that original password. If the file was encrypted with version 1, it will then be automatically upgraded to version 2 and to use the new sign in password which means you won’t be prompted again for the old password.
Or you can use the File | Upgrade 1.x Files and AES 128 Files menu from the AxCrypt app, to upgrade your AxCrypt 1.x files to AxCrypt 2.x.
If you find that AxCrypt 2.x is unsuitable and you would like to use 1.x instead you are free to do so, but we will not be actively developing 1.x, nor will support be a priority. We recommend all users, old and new, to always use the most current released version of AxCrypt.

AxCrypt 2 asks you to sign in to your account, which AxCrypt 1 did not. We now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files. The password that you’re being asked for is the password to your account, which you probably created when you first installed AxCrypt 1.
If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, which often is the case directly after upgrading to version 2, you will be prompted for that original password. Hello Raymond,
Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response(s).
“The account key is always kept secured with your password as well, although one part of it is not secret and is used when securing files for you and your team. For you, the benefit is that you can change the password for all files in one single operation”
The above statements state the Key sharing and AxCrypt Password Change feature.
When the user changes the password on our account site(https://account.axcrypt.net/), the private key is re-encrypted with the new password.
When you change (not reset) your password for your AxCrypt ID account, *all* files previously encrypted with that AxCrypt ID account will automatically open with the new changed password.
When the user then sign-ins with the app, the local encrypted copy of the private key is updated with the new encrypted version from the server.
Thus, the user can actually “change” password for all his/her files.
Note that the file can actually still be opened with the original password, since the file encryption key is encrypted with that also, still (until it’s updated).
Another way to view it is that AxCrypt always “key shares” files with yourself.
“The account key is always kept secured with your password as well, although one part of it is not secret and is used when securing files for you and your team.”
This statement refer the AxCrypt Key sharing feature.
AxCrypt Key sharing feature using the recipient’s public key and it embeds the shared key into the file.
For more about AxCrypt keys, please check our blog: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/what-is-an-axcrypt-id/ .
Hello Raymond .
Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response(s).
We are not creating any files with Ransomware file pattern. .axx is our default and only file extension.
All text editing, word/image processing, and more other softwares are having its own default extension.
For example: Notepad’s default extension is.txt, Word’s default extension .docx and etc.
Like the same way, AxCrypt was developed. AxCrypt encrypted files having the .axx file extension as per our design.
Also we need AxCrypt application to decrypt the AxCrypt encrypted files.
Only, for some very common file formats, most operating systems come with some form (often limited) of software pre-installed.
Unfortunately Operating system providers does not yet include AxCrypt with their operating systems.
So please add .axx file extension in your server whitelist.

Hello Raymond,
You can check the difference between the Password reset and password change here: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/ .
Please note: Password reset and password change are not same .
Password reset is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files.
When you change (not reset) your password for your AxCrypt ID account, *all* files previously encrypted with that AxCrypt ID account will automatically open with the new changed password.
Please note: If reset your AxCrypt account password after key sharing a file with you then you will not get access to the key shared encrypted files with the new password(which was created after password reset). You have to use the old password to decrypt the encrypted files.
March 8, 2019 at 07:10 in reply to: How can I make use of export/import public sharing key or Axcrpyt ID ? #13381Hello Raymond,
You can export and share your AxCrypt public key. But not other public keys. AxCrypt will accept and work with AxCrypt generated public keys only.
If you are trying to decrypt/open the someone’s AxCrypt encrypted file, then you needs the someone’s file password which was used for file encryption.
There is no need to share passwords in order to send or share files securely with others. AxCrypt has a key sharing feature letting you add recipients by email address, who when they receive the file can open it with their own AxCrypt password.
AxCrypt Key Sharing is a Premium(paid) feature. But you can use it as a free via Key Management.
AxCrypt app having the feature called Key Management. Using this feature, you can export your public keys and import some other AxCrypt user’s public keys to share the encrypted file to others.
You can export your public sharing key from the AxCrypt app menu File | Key Management | Export My Public Sharing Key.
After exporting your public key, you need to send the key file to the 3rd party peoples(who is going to share and send the file with you).
Now 3rd party people need to import your public key file to their AxCrypt app using the menu option File | Key Management | Import Someone’s Public Sharing Key.
Please note: If you reset your AxCrypt account password, then again you should export your public key again and share it with them.
Hello Raymond,
Sorry to say, There is no user guide/manual for download the latest version.
With AxCrypt Premium, You can secure your folders using AxCrypt Secured Folder feature.
AxCrypt secures files, individually. However, you can designate folders as ‘secured’. The folders will be monitored for new files, and AxCrypt will secure all new files with a single click, or when you sign out.
You can also select multiple files, including all files in a folder, to be secured in a single operation. They still remain individual files, and the folder itself is not secured, just the files in it.
You can encrypt a folder by using Secured Folders option. After that if you create a subfolder, it won’t re-encrypt the files of subfolder.
We can include the sub-folder by enabling the feature from the AxCrypt app menu File | Options | Include Subfolders. By default Include Subfolders will be disabled. So Sub-folders are not encrypted without enabling this feature.
Hello June,
If you are trying to decrypt the someone’s AxCrypt encrypted file then you needs the someone’s file password which was used for file encryption.
AxCrypt has a key sharing feature letting you add recipients by email address, who when they receive the file can open it with their own AxCrypt password.
Just sign in to the AxCrypt app with your AxCrypt account.
Then try to decrypt or open the encrypted files which was key shared with your email address.
Please note: If reset your AxCrypt account password after key sharing a file with you then you will not get access to the key shared encrypted files with the new password(which was created after password reset). You have to use the old password to decrypt the encrypted files.
Still, if you are facing any issues, please feel free to contact our support(support@axcrypt.net) with detailed information about the issue.
Please check out our video tutorials at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSoXBjq6iCG5232fHoWStA and our other documentation at https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/get-started/ to get started with AxCrypt.
Hello Neil,
It might be because of some third party applications or any firewalls are blocking the AxCrypt application and its files.
If you have updated the encrypted files contents and which is pending for re-encryption, then please check the folder(C:\Users\”User Name”\AppData\Local\AxCrypt). If you found any subfolders inside the AxCrypt folder, take a back up of those folders. Then clean the local cache by the below described way.
Please delete the folder %LocalAppData%\AxCrypt(C:\Users\’User Name’\AppData\Local\AxCrypt) to clear the local cache and starts the AxCrypt app like a new.
Then uninstall the AxCrypt app and install the latest version of the AxCrypt app. You can download the same from our official website: https://forum.axcrypt.net/download/ .
Now install the AxCrypt app and try to start AxCrypting……
If the file in fact is located in a folder designated as “Secured”, it will soon be re-encrypted again since those folders are monitored for unencrypted files and will encrypt them when you sign out, or click the “Broom” clean up icon.
AxCrypt 2 uses a more robust method for the automatic re-encryption, which sometimes means you as the user have to tell AxCrypt to do it. You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.
So after editing the encrypted files, we have to click the broom icon or sign out from the AxCrypt app to re-encrypt the updated files.
Please note: If you opened and updated an encrypted text file with notepad and at the same time you had opened an another notepad application also, then you have to close both the opened applications to re-encrypt the encrypted files. You have to close all the opened corresponding applications properly.
If the above does not help, Please send the complete error report with some screenshots of the exceptions, so that we will try to troubleshoot the same as soon as possible.
Still, if you are facing any issues, please feel free to contact our support(support@axcrypt.net) with detailed information about the issue.
You can also send the complete error report to troubleshoot the issue. Please follow the detailed instructions to take the complete error report: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .
Hello kevin,
No, does not support separate files for different passwords.
AxCrypt 2.x use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files.
I am sorry to say, AxCrypt 2 does not support specific password for specific files feature due to some security issues.
In our blog(https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/), you will find why we are not supporting two or more different passwords.
