    Hello Roxy,

I think your encrypted file(word file) is the opened state only you not close the encrypted file and corresponding application properly, otherwise you will not get the error message.

If you did not close the file properly that time you did try to sign out/exit from the AxCrypt app then AxCrypt app displays the Error message like you getting.

If you closed all the open corresponding applications and encrypted files properly. now the Broom icon is disabled. Now you can sign out/Exit from the AxCrypt app. without any issue.

If not close the opened Application & corresponding application Broom icon is enabled only.(it indicate encrypted file(s) are open).

    Hello Roxy,

AxCrypt will keep track on the opened encrypted files, to update and re-encrypt the same. If we opened the file and updated the contents, then AxCrypt will re-encrypt the updated file.

So after editing the encrypted files, we have to click the broom icon or sign out from the AxCrypt app to re-encrypt the updated files. We have to close all the instance of the encrypted file(s) opened application.

And the AxCrypt app will be checking whether the opened file and the corresponding application are closed or not? If closed, then the AxCrypt app will automatically update the contents of the file and re-encrypt the same.

Actually, we have to close the file opened application completely, to update and re-encrypt the file. Sometimes, we have to manually click the red Broom icon, to clean and update the pending files.

Please note: If you opened and updated an encrypted text file with notepad and at the same time you had opened an another notepad application also, then you have to close both the opened applications to re-encrypt the encrypted files. You have to close all the opened corresponding applications properly.

Please close the encrypted file and corresponding file, then you can signout/exit from the AxCrypt app. without any issue.

Still, you are facing any issues, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net.

    Hello Jan,

If the file is actually damaged to this extent, no, it can’t be fixed. The data is just not there to decrypt it.

Please check the files whether those are corrupted or not using the below instructions.

But we have a feature called Check File. You can able to decrypt the corrupted AxCrypt encrypted files by navigating the menu File | Options | enable Debug from the AxCrypt app.

Also we can generate a summary of file structure, to see whether the file was encrypted with AxCrypt or not.

For the summary, you have to use the debug menu and then select the Check File menu option(Debug | Check File). Now you will be prompted to choose the files. Choose the AxCrypt encrypted file. Then AxCrypt will generate a summary of file structure.

Still, you are facing any issues, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net.

    Hello Fluz,

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

AxCrypt is file encryption with no backdoor, that means AxCrypt do not store user’s account password, anywhere. There is no way to open the encrypted files without the file password.

Please note: Do not forget your password, or you will lose your encrypted file and always keep a backup of all your important files, encrypted or not.

We will implement unique features exclusively for AxCrypt Business users.

Still,if you are asking any Query/issues, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net.

    Hello Jan,

Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response

It might be happened because of some firewall/antivirus or other third party applications are blocking the AxCrypt app. So please check the firewall or other software settings.

If you have updated the encrypted files contents and which is pending for re-encryption, then please check the folder(C:\Users\”User Name”\AppData\Local\AxCrypt). If you found any subfolders inside the AxCrypt folder, take a back up of those folders. Then clean the local cache by the below described way.

Please delete the folder(%LocalAppData%\AxCrypt(C:\Users\’User Name’\AppData\Local\AxCrypt) to clear the local cache and starts the AxCrypt app like a new.

Then uninstall the AxCrypt app and install the latest version of the AxCrypt app. You can download the same from our official website: https://forum.axcrypt.net/download/.(please ignore if already download)

Now install the AxCrypt app and try to start AxCrypting……

    Hello ed,

AxCrypt is a file encryption software and it requires a full write access to the path when encrypting/decrypting the files.

If the performing user account does not have the necessary access for the file path then AxCrypt app will throw the exception like what you are getting.

Please provide the necessary access(write access for the currently signed in user) to the file path and then try to encrypt/decrypt the files under the specified location.

For more information, please check out the link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/2623670/access-denied-or-other-errors-when-you-access-or-work-with-files-and-f

    Hello Darshak,

Please avoid sending a same query in different mediums. You may get duplicate response.

I am very sorry to hear that your client apparently are the victim of a hacker ransom attack against your files.

If the files are having an “.axx” file extension, then the files are encrypted with the AxCrypt app only.

However, please understand that AxCrypt is just a tool that is used by millions of legitimate users for good purposes. I am very sad that a hacker has chosen AxCrypt as the tool to perform the ransom attacks.

Unfortunately, in this case, AxCrypt is based on strong encryption, and it is generally not possible to crack the encryption.

What you must do is contact your local police and have them follow the money and Internet trail to the hacker. Since others appear to be in the same situation, you may want to contact media in order to make this problem more widely known, and also gain the possibility of a group action of all the victims against the hacker.

We cannot help, we are in no way involved, and there is no way to open the files without the passphrase used.

Please read http://blog.axantum.com/2012/07/axcrypt-used-for-ransom-attacks.html for a longer discussion of what I know about this affair.

    Hello Linnea,

No need to remove this folder. you can enable the include sub-folder option. AxCrypt encrypts the folder automatically or  You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.

we have to click the broom icon or sign out from the AxCrypt app to re-encrypt the updated or new files.

    AxCrypt Secured Folder:

AxCrypt secures files, individually. However, you can designate folders as ‘secured’. The folders will be monitored for new files, and AxCrypt will secure all new files with a single click, or when you sign out.

You can also select multiple files, including all files in a folder, to be secured in a single operation. They still remain individual files, and the folder itself is not secured, just the files in it.

AxCrypt Re-Encryption with a Broom icon:

If the file in fact is located in a folder designated as “Secured”, it will soon be re-encrypted again since those folders are monitored for unencrypted files and will encrypt them when you sign out, or click the “Broom” clean up icon.

AxCrypt 2 uses a more robust method for the automatic re-encryption, which sometimes means you as the user have to tell AxCrypt to do it. You’ll see this by the “broom” icon becoming red. This indicates there’s something in need of “clean up”, i.e. re-encryption.

    Include Subfolders:

You can encrypt a folder by using Secured Folders option. After that if you create a subfolder, it won’t re-encrypt the files of subfolder.

We can include the sub-folder by enabling the feature from the AxCrypt app menu File | Options | Include Subfolders. By default Include Subfolders will be disabled. So Sub-folders are not encrypted without enabling this feature.

How to remove the folder in secured folder list :

You can able to decrypt the AxCrypt secured folder by navigating to the Secured Folders Tab from the AxCrypt app. Then Right click on the selected folder (which you want to decrypt) and choose the menu option Decrypt Permanently.

Incase the folder is not listed in the Secured Folder list, then you have to secure the folder again using the Add Secured Folder option from the right click content menu.

Or In windows explorer, right click on the selected folder and choose AxCrypt > Decrypt.

I hope, your problem will get resolved. If not, please write the email to support@axcrypt.net with detailed information.

    Hello Chris,

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, then you have to enter the file password while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file.

While viewing the encrypted file (having different password than your sign in password), you have to enter the file password. If you enter the AxCrypt account password instead of file password, then you will get the alert message like “You are already logged in with this password! “. So you need to enter the file password.

    For example:

Try to encrypt a file with your AxCrypt password and then reset your AxCrypt account password using Reset Password Feature. Now if you open the encrypted file, you will be prompted for enter the file password (which is used for encryption of the file).

The above situation was happened for you. So kindly try to remember your file password(which is used for encryption) then try to decrypt the encrypted file.

Please know about the password reset and change, actually both are different. You can check the difference between the Password reset and password change here: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/ .

AxCrypt is a file encryption software with no backdoor. So please careful with your AxCrypt account password.

Still, you are facing any issues, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net.

    Hello TL Zimmerman,

AxCrypt 2 works just like your email software or most other password-protected systems. You sign in once and remain signed in until signed out. Just like you can read many emails without entering the password every time, AxCrypt will do the same. The files are still encrypted, but your password is remembered until you sign out of AxCrypt.

AxCrypt stays signed in until signed out, just like most similar applications such as your email. Once signed in, you can read, write and update information without having to re-enter the password, until signed out. This is by design.

We are discussing it with our team also We are considering and implement the features in the future.

    Hello Toni,

AxCrypt is a file encryption software with no backdoor, That means (we do not store the account password anywhere in our servers). Nobody can decrypt the encrypted files without the file password used in the file encryption. This is the way AxCrypt app was designed.

So please try to remember the file password(which was used in the encryption process) to decrypt/open the old encrypted files.

If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://forum.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/. Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this.

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, then you have to enter the file password while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file.

Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.

Still, you are facing any issues, please provide more information about the issue and write a mail to support@axcrypt.net.
