    Hello C. Silva,

When you say “when my laptop is offline, sometimes I cannot decrypt my files” it’s an indication of a user problem – not a software problem, or that there is more to the story so to speak. Our software is entirely deterministic during decryption, so when the word *sometimes* appears there must be something else that varies.

There is also a difference to note between the signing in to AxCrypt, and decrypting a file. If your software in your laptop is not synchronized with an updated password online, a situation can certainly arise where the sign in process offline expects a different password than online. This does not account for your description of a “sometimes” behavior.

Notable is the fact that you *reset* your password on March 5, indicating that you have at least two “correct” passwords in use – one old and one new. Please note the difference between a password *reset* and a password *change*. You did a reset.

Another explanation of the “sometimes” effect could then be that the files you can’t open are from before (or after) that password reset. A password reset does not allow you to open files encrypted before the reset, with the password set after the reset. The reset is only to allow you to sign in again, and is used to encrypt new files. To decrypt old files, you still need to know the original password.

If you can send a screen shot when you get this “sometimes” problem, it will help us understand exactly at what point the password is not accepted.

    Hello Ricardo,

You misunderstand. Your files are still encrypted, it’s just that AxCrypt 2 remembers the password to use to decrypt the files so you don’t have enter it all the time.

If the screen saver goes active, or it goes to sleep, or the inactivity timer is used etc – that password will also be forgotten. So, if your hard drive for example is disconnected the files on are still encrypted.

AxCrypt version 1 can be used, but it is no longer supported by us as it is obsolete.

If you uninstall AxCrypt you should decrypt your files before. Your files will not be lost otherwise, but you’ll have to re-install AxCrypt in order to decrypt them.

    Hello Ricardo,

You can set an inactivity timeout under settings.

I’d also recommend to read https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/leaving-computer-axcrypt/ which discusses the sign in metaphor used by AxCrypt 2.

    Hello Shawn P,

Thank you for keeping tabs on us!

We’re still working, and in fact compared to a year ago we’re spending more time than ever. However – we’re working on many fronts – web, PC, Mac, iOS, Android etc.

As Carl mentions, we do try to ensure we’re stable before releasing. For the fall and early 2018 we’ve been focusing on our new Business functionality, while doing a lot of development on the common apps such as the PC as well. While all is not public, you can follow the main development at https://bitbucket.org/axantum/axcrypt-net .

We are indeed working towards an update of the apps on all platforms, but there are many things to coordinate – translations not the least of them. We want to roll out support for as many languages as possible.

    Hello Niels,

The reason is that you used to used an old password (we can see from your account that you’ve used AxCrypt for almost 2 year).

You did not *change* your password yesterday, you *reset* it.

If you do not remember the password to your account, you can always reset it. This is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files.

If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password you will be prompted for that original password.

Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.

You need to remember the password you originally used to encrypt the files!

    Hello Sally,

Yes, the recipient must download and install AxCrypt.

No, you should not given the recipient the password. You should use the key sharing feature (and ensure you’re using AxCrypt 2, not version 1 which is obsolete). We have videos showing this on our home page, https://forum.axcrypt.net/ .

    Hello Sandy,

It looks like the actual “Sign in” dialog is hidden from view. Do you have multiple screens, or moved your laptop from using a larger stationary screen to just using the internal?

Try hitting “ESC” (that should close the sign in dialog, even if it’s hidden) and see of the menu now becomes active.

    Hello Birgit,

No, we can’t automatically encrypt files in a folder, because it causes problems for many softwares. Also, it’s still a ‘race’ between then backup / synchronization and AxCrypt that we can never *guarantee* to win.

However – you can (probably) configure your backup / synchronization software to only backup files ending with .axx . This will ensure that no unencrypted data ever reaches the cloud. See https://support.code42.com/Administrator/4/Configuring/Include_or_exclude_files_for_backup for details.

    Hello Laurent,

If you *change* your password (not *reset* it), you will be able to open encrypted files with the new password (and the original).

So you do not need to decrypt files before making a password *change*.

    Hello John tukmol,

(I moved this to a different topic since you mention “PC” and the original topic was about opening AxCrypt files on a Mac)

If AxCrypt is being used, “sample.pdf” would become “sample-pdf.axx” not “sample.pdf.axx”, but perhaps that is what you mean.

If you are not using AxCrypt, or renaming the files yourself, someone else is.

There are reports of criminals using TeamViewer and guessing the password to users computers and then installing and encrypting files, and then demanding ransom. Typically this is done by leaving a file on the desktop with this message.

    Hello Peter,

Something seems wrong with the installation on your desktop. A screen shot might help understand the situation. You might also want to try to repair the installation using Control Panel.

    Hello Jos,

Look at the file properties (right-click in Explorer), and if you can send both a screen shot of that and the actual error message from AxCrypt.

I think we’ve actually translated most of these texts – but not released a new version. We will try to do so in the coming week, it is time anyway.

    Hello Douglas,

The same response as before is still valid:

AxCrypt is free as it is, but you can subscribe to Premium which gives you additional functions and features. See https://forum.axcrypt.net/pricing/ .

You do not need to reinstall or anything.
