    Dale

    Hi,

After signing in I notice that when I open encrypted files, sometimes it asks for a ‘File password’ when opening the file, and sometimes it doesn’t (the sign in password is enough in these cases).

Why does it have this behaviour? What’s different about the files which require a file password even after signing in?

    Hello Dale,

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

If the file was encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, then you have to enter the file password while viewing/decrypting the encrypted file.

While viewing the encrypted file (having different password than your sign in password), you have to enter the file password. If you enter the AxCrypt account password instead of the file password. So you need to enter the file password.

    For example:

Try to encrypt a file with your AxCrypt password and then reset your AxCrypt account password using Reset Password Feature. Now if you open the encrypted file, you will be prompted for enter the file password (which is used for encryption of the file).

The above situation happened to you.

    Thanks.

How do I disable the ‘sign in’ every time I open axcrypt?  I would like to use the software completely offline (no sign in) in the following way:

Open file > launches axcrpyt > Asks for file password.

Entering a sing in password means I have to enter two passwords a lot of the time. I don’t want this.  I also don’t want any passwords or IDs on any servers. Offline mode still asks for sign in.

    Hello Dale,

If you are using the AxCrypt app offline/online you need to sign in every time. Currently, there is no option to disable the ‘sign in’ every time you open axcrypt.

    Hello Martin,

AxCrypt will allow the users to decrypt the encrypted file with the original password which is used for encryption.

If you think you almost know the password, we have simple software allowing you to try to find your password, and you can download the most recent version from https://account.axcrypt.net/Download/AxBruteForce.exe and read of how to use it at https://www.axcrypt.net/axcrypt-brute-force/ . Please note that we cannot provide support beyond this.

Unfortunately, if you do not know the password for an AxCrypt-encrypted file you cannot open it, even if you can sign in to the account. This is by design, it’s just this situation that AxCrypt is made for and it works like this even if you actually are the original owner of the file.

So please try to remember the file password(which was used in the encryption process) to decrypt/open the old encrypted files.

If you do not remember the password to your account, you can always reset it. This is not a way to recover encrypted files! It’s only to allow you to sign in to the AxCrypt app and web. The new password will be used to encrypt new files. Go to https://account.axcrypt.net/Home/PasswordReset to do this, or you can also go there from AxCrypt with File | Options | Password Reset.

For more info about Password Reset: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6whtjSb3pc and https://www.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-and-axcrypt

A final note: Do not forget your password, or you will lose your encrypted file and always keep a backup of all your important files, encrypted or not.

still, if you have any queries, please write to Support@axcrypt.net. we are happy to help you.
