As Klaus explains – you should only be asked for a second password if the file was not encrypted with the password you use to sign to AxCrypt with.

If the file in question is encrypted with AxCrypt 1.x, it will automatically be re-encrypted using the sign-in password – thus eliminating the extra prompt the next time. Provided you have a sufficiently modern version of AxCrypt installed, and you have not disabled the option.

I can’t tell what version you have, or what version the file is encrypted with. You can see this in the main window title bar and the recent files list.

Hello Chris,

AxCrypt stays signed in until signed out, just like most similar applications such as your email. Once signed in, you can read, write and update information without having to re-enter the password, until signed out. AxCrypt will automatically sign out when the screen saver goes active, or you can sign out manually.

The file is still encrypted, the software just remembers the password until you “sign out”.

I’m generally very sceptical about third party “cleaners” of all kind, on general principles. Don’t know anything specific about AdwCleaner – but many users having this problem previously were able to uninstall the Lavasoft component using uninstall procedures provided by Lavasoft as I understand it (i.e. Uninstall in Control Panel in most cases). I do prefer using manufacturer-supported mechanisms.

That being said, since AdwCleaner seemed to help Drain0 in this instance, I’ll certainly keep in mind.

Don’t think the forum supports pinning of solutions, but I’ll check what we can do.

If you send an email to support att axcrypt dott net I can setup you up as an external beta tester via TestFlight for the iOS app. We’re just waiting for approval from Apple, should be any day. It does adress some “can’t open” issues. Can’t say if yours is one of them, but let’s see.

Just deleting a network driver component (which by the way typically requires a little sneakiness to start with since they usually are in use), is not a good idea. I suggest restoring them and then uninstall the proper way…

I got the humorous intent in the small gripe, and thought I’d escalate the humor a little bit, but irony is hard to do in writing (that’s actually why smileys were invented). But it was just intended to cause some smiles at best, I was not annoyed or anything.

Yes, I saw that it was directed at Eddie, but I think I’ve done similar things and Eddies responses are really very good!

Lawrence summed it up fairly correctly (thank you).

The point is that it’s the strategy in AxCrypt 1 that *is* broken. Since it can’t determine the correct situation in every case every time, it just doesn’t work. This was a learning experience over several years in AxCrypt 1.

We’re trying to make AxCrypt 2 more robust in many ways. In this case we tried to use the very simple rule: If the launch starts a new process, we assume that when that process exits – the file is no longer in use. The relaying launcher like you have breaks that strategy.

So, the end result is we’ll probably have to give up trying to be smart. Because if we try to patch this case by being smart (like, oh the launched process launched another process as a child, then we’ll wait for the child or something like that) we’ll just be outsmarted again by some other app’s weird behavior.

Sometimes it’s hard to answer clearly when the question is not stated clearly. But, here goes:

Q:  “If the first user is using 256bit encryption, will the second user be able to read it given they use the free product (max 128bit?) or will they need to subscribe?”

A: “If the first user is using 256-bit encryption with a Premium subscription, the second user will be able to read it with AxCrypt Free. A user receiving encrypted and key shared files from someone do not need to subscribe to Premium to open such a file. To be able to key share, i.e. be the sender, Premium is required.”

Q: “Are you going to fly to New York, or are you going to take the train?”

A: “I don’t know, I have no trip planned for New York right now. But, when I do,  and assuming we’re referring to New York, NY, USA it’s likely to be by plane unless they’ve opened the transatlantic railway by then, seeing as I live and work out of Stockholm, Sweden. For those who skipped that crucial geography lesson, Stockholm Sweden and New York is separated by a big pond of water called the Atlantic ocean west of Sweden. Going east instead, you can take the train for quite some distance, but then there’s another pond called the Pacific ocean. There is of course the option of going by boat, but it’s fairly slow and very expensive, so I probably won’t be doing that.”

Thanks for the feedback, and for your information, we will be introducing options for auto-sign out quite soon. However, we do this partially against our own advice. AxCrypt 2 opens all AxCrypt 1-encrypted files. However, we’ve seen a similar issue with some custom text file associations, specifically when .txt is associated with another program, whose only purpose is to launch a second program and then exit. This confuses AxCrypt who thinks the first program is the real program, notes that it has exited and thus concludes you’re done with the file and then remove it.

We’ll be doing something to fix this, but we’re also trying to avoid getting into the AxCrypt 1-trap of trying to ad-hoc second guess various applications weird behavior. In the end, we may simply never automatically remove files, but always use the clean up (the red broom) function.
