Unable to re-encrypt file with changes

I have been using the free version for many years, simply to encrypt one text document that I occasionally edit. I used to be able to open the document via the app, edit it and then save the changes back into an encrypted version. But recently I have been unable to retain any changes made while the file was decrypted. I switched to mac recently; I don’t know if this issue also affects Windows.
