Hello Graham and Frank,
@Graham Wilson,
When you are trying with AxCrypt 2.x app, please collect the detailed error report and screenshot showing where the problem is. Send those to support@axcrypt.net . We will investigate the logs and resolve the problem as soon as possible.
Please follow the detailed instructions here to take the complete error report: https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/send-complete-error-report/ .
@Frank,
Yes, you are right. AxCrypt 2 does not support specific password for specific files feature due to some security issues.
In our blog(https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/), you will find why we are not supporting more than one different passwords.
But AxCrypt 2.x has lot of unique and rich features. we increased the security level also. I will explain the difference between the two versions AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x,
AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x are compatible in the sense that 2.x can open all files secured with 1.x. In addition to that, 2.x implements of lot of new rich features, while some functions of 1.x are deprecated. Files secured with AxCrypt 2.x are not possible to open with AxCrypt 1.x. You cannot have both AxCrypt 1.x and 2.x installed at the same time.
AxCrypt 2.x will be available on many platforms and devices, while AxCrypt 1.x will always be limited to the Windows desktop. The new version is rewritten from the ground up on a new technological platform, and there are many differences.
AxCrypt 2 comes with newly improved and user-friendly user interface, account management(subscription information, password change and etc.) and more additional features.
We are stopped developing new features and fixing issues for the legacy version(AxCrypt 1.x). So we will suggest you to use the AxCrypt 2.x app.
For more info about AxCrypt 2.x, Please check out our video tutorials at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSoXBjq6iCG5232fHoWStA and our other documentation at https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/get-started/ to get started with AxCrypt
RJ OughtonI agree with those who are unsatisfied with only one password allowing access to all encrypted files. For example, I might want file A to be accessed by individuals 1, 2 and 3 and file B accessed by individuals 1 and 4 and file C accessed by myself only. Used to be that way and now it has been “improved”.
AlanSo let me get this straight, your new version maliciously damages the user’s files, forcing them to use your pay-through-your-nose version, if they’ve ever looked at them with the new version?
Until 5 minutes ago if I met you on the street and you said you were the guy behind Axcrypt I’d have shaken your hand. Now I’d be more likely to spit at you.
What a DISGUSTING thing to do to your users, people that trusted you! My goodness.
Hello RJ Oughton,
Please check our blog to know know why AxCrypt 2.x does not support different passwords for different files.
You can use AxCrypt 2.x to fulfill your requirement. Use AxCrypt key sharing in AxCrypt 2.x to provide the access to the specified encrypted file(s) to the specified users.
There is no need to share passwords in order to send or share files securely with others. AxCrypt has a key sharing feature letting you add recipients by email address, who when they receive the file can open it with their own AxCrypt password.
Key sharing embeds the shared key into the file. The file must thus first be key shared with the recipient, then sent or file shared. Please note that AxCrypt does not share or send the actual file. To see a quick instructional video explaining how to use key sharing, please view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9z3KOZD-Yks .
For the easy key sharing feature, you don’t have to share your password. To share a file key without sharing password, go through the following steps:
- Choose an encrypted file from the recent files tab Or Press the icon and select the encrypted file(s);
- Select the team member you want to share it to, with his email address.
- Send/share the physical encrypted file(s) to your team members via mail, drive or etc. AxCrypt will not send the physical file.
- Send the encrypted file to the team member(s). The person will be able to decrypt it, without password.
Note that the person you’re sending the file has to use AxCrypt 2 with the email address you shared the file.
Sharing a secured file is made directly from the AxCrypt software by choosing the secured file, click the share button and simply select the team member you want to share it to. The recipient just needs a free AxCrypt ID and will be automatically invited via email if necessary. The invitation email contains instructions on how to view and edit the file.
As per your Example:
Encrypt a file A and key share with the users 1,2 and 3 – users 1,2 and 3 can open the encrypted file with their AxCrypt account password.
Encrypt a file B and key share with the users 1 and 4 – users 1 and 4 can open the encrypted file with your AxCrypt account password.
Encrypt a file C and don’t key share with any other users. – only you can decrypt/open the encrypted file with your AxCrypt account password.
Hello Alan,
Sorry to hear this.
We have launched the AxCrypt 2.x with easy to use, rich user interface and lot of features.
We have dropped some features in AxCrypt 2.x which was supported in AxCrypt 1.x. But AxCrypt 2.x comes with an alternative options for the dropped features.
Please try our latest version of AxCrypt application with 30 days of free trial subscription. We can use the AxCrypt windows version with a free subscription. Without any payment, we can use the AxCrypt app with limited features in windows.
You can check why we are charging for our premium subscriptions, here: https://forum.axcrypt.net/support/faq/#recurring-cost
Please check out our video tutorials at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoSoXBjq6iCG5232fHoWStA and our other documentation at https://forum.axcrypt.net/information/get-started/ to get started with AxCrypt.
Finally, If you do not like our new version, you can download the AxCrypt 1.x from our legacy site: http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/LegacyDownloads.html
We are not providing any updates for the AxCrypt 1.x.
Please feel free to contact our support executives via support@axcrypt.net or our forums.
HajoYour new method to demand a general password is ridiculous! I encrypt occasionally and then need different passwords for differend environments. The new method makes sense for other usage and could well have been added as an alternative feature.
Hajo
AndreHi All
Just thought I would also add my 2 cents as AxCrypt 1.x was way up on my essential software list. However I agree with Hajo that FORCING everyone to use a general password is ridiculous! There are several reasons why I could not use the new version and its very sad that the developer has taken this limited/restricted approach.
Also, one very big turn off with the new version is that it is forcing you to unnecessarily “trust” that it is doing other things correctly else all your files become compromised! AES encryption is already a very secure private key encryption algorithm and all many people need was an option to encrypt a file – not to trust the software to do other fancy stuff and hope that the additional processes are also secure.
Please bring back an option to just encrypt a file with any password – you can’t get any simpler than that – and sell the other fancy stuff.
Hello Hajo and Andre,
We understood your concern. But, based on the users’ feedback, we have decided to keep the user account and the single account password for encryption.
The reason behind the single password and the user account is clearly mentioned in our blogs. Please check the same.
https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/use-of-different-passwords/ and https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/encryption-vs-authentication/.
Still, we can change your AxCrypt account password with a different password using the password change feature – https://forum.axcrypt.net/blog/password-reset-axcrypt/. This is a another way of encrypting files with different passwords.
Also, Premium users can use the Key Sharing feature to send encrypted files to other users. Free users can use Key Management feature to key share and send encrypted files to other users.
Martin JacobsonAll files encrypted with the 1st version Axcrypt can now be decrypted by anyone with the latest version of Axcrypt which automatically changes the file structure and enables the file to be opened with a password created in the new program.
Yikes!
AndreHi Martin
If this is really the case then it is shocking! If I have interpreted this correctly then this is the very reason why I still would not use the new version – there is too much unknown in regards to whether the software is doing – and only doing – what we expect it to do!
I will try to test this out in the coming week and if this is really the case then I will need to find an alternative software to encrypt my files – or just develop one myself.
Thanks for the heads up!
Hello Andre,
Your encrypted files are encrypted with the old version(1.x). Now you can decrypt/open the encrypted file in AxCrypt latest version with the original file password(which was used in the file encryption process). without file password nobody to decrypt/open the encrypted file.
AxCrypt 2 asks you to sign in to your account, which AxCrypt 1 did not. We now use a single sign on model where the same password is used to sign in to our servers and to protect your files. The password that you’re being asked for is the password to your account, which you probably created when you first installed AxCrypt 1.
If you open files encrypted with a different password than your sign in password, which often is the case directly after upgrading to version 2, you will be prompted for that original password. If the file was encrypted with version 1, it will then be automatically upgraded to version 2 and to use the new sign in password which means you won’t be prompted again for the old password.

Axcrypt1.7.3The problem with the old version 1.7.3 is still a big PROBLEM ! Redirection into the new one 2.o version is totally bullshit. Put the old version, a lot of people can make a backdoor ! Your 2.0 version is still bad between the 1.7.3 and even older.
Hello
If you need the legacy version you contact our support team. Please write an mail to support@axcrypt.net. they are helping you.
Axcrypt1.7.3@prabhukumar R Hello, thanks for the service !
Vidarr KerrI do not like the newer versions of Axcrypt. I do Not want more accounts, with more sites and people in my life. I just want an app on my computer to simply encrypt and decrypt things. This is just one reason I do not like the new Axcrypt.
All of my machines are encrypted using VeraCrypt, but sometimes I just want to encrypt a single file/folder fast and easy. HAVING to HAVE an INTERNET CONNECTION to encrypt a file is ridiculous on so many levels. Do you realize how insecure it is to encrypt and decrypt files while you are online? I do not think you do, or you would not have gone this ridiculous route.
I NEVER encrypt and decrypt files while I am online. Never. Furthermore, it is none of your business what my passwords are (how strong they are, and whatever else you data gather) and how often I encrypt and decrypt files. Logging on to some internet site to use encryption has got to be the stupidest, most potentially insecure way of using encryption EVER. WTF were you thinking?
Good Luck. I mean, it looks like Axcrypt is buried. You will NEVER be successful with this business model.
