I just downloaded and am trying this out. I double click an encrypted file and Axcrypt automatically decrypts it without asking me for a password, giving me this message:

“We’re doing this without asking for your password again! You’re signed in, so we won’t ask for your password to encrypt, decrypt, or open documents. Your documents are still safely encrypted with your password!”

How so, when I can easily double click and open it as before? Isn’t the entire point of encrypting something to require a password? How do I turn this off? I see that after I restart I am asked for my password, but I want this done every time I close and reopen a file(s). Must I sign out every time I truly wish to secure it? This seems like an unnecessary extra step and absurd design decision that leaves users constantly susceptible to vulnerability in the name of forgetfulness, and rebooting should never be a necessary prerequisite to file security.

As one who only periodically powers down my computer and isn’t willing to commit my file security to being able to remember to sign out every damn time I wish to encrypt, if I can’t find a way to disable this feature, Axcrypt is useless to me.

Why has this been done, and what is the thinking behind this design?

    Hello Charles,

I will explain How AxCrypt(2.x) Works:

AxCrypt 2 works just like your email software or most other password-protected systems. You sign in once and remain signed in until signed out. Just like you can read many emails without entering the password every time, AxCrypt will do the same. The files are still encrypted, but your password is remembered until you sign out of AxCrypt.

AxCrypt stays signed in until signed out, just like most similar applications such as your email. Once signed in, you can read, write and update information without having to re-enter the password, until signed out. AxCrypt will automatically sign out when the screen saver goes active(based on the Inactivity Sign Out configuration), or you can sign out manually.

You can use our Inactivity Sign Out feature, to sign out the AxCrypt app on certain time interval of inactivity. Also you can sign out the AxCrypt app, when opened the encrypted file(s). Now AxCrypt will ask the user to enter the sign in password to sign in to the AxCrypt app. For Inactivity Sign Out, File | Options | Inactivity Sign Out | Choose duration in minutes.

For Inactivity Sign Out, File | Options | Inactivity Sign Out | Choose duration in minutes.

Please note: Inactivity Sign Out is s premium feature.
